“Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen.” Revelation 7:12 (NKJV)
INTRODUCTION: THE OWNER OF EVERY BLESSING
In a world that often chases blessings as personal gain, Scripture reorients our hearts with this truth: Blessings belong to our God. He is not just the Giver, He is the rightful Owner of every good and perfect gift. The cry of heaven in Revelation 7:12 is not about what they are receiving, but what they are ascribing to God:
“Blessing… be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”
Let’s journey through Scripture to see how God is both the Source and the Recipient of every blessing.
1. GOD IS THE SOURCE OF BLESSING
From the first pages of the Bible, we see God’s nature as One who blesses His creation
“Then God blessed them…” – Genesis 1:28
“I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you… and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” – Genesis 12:2–3
God blessed Abraham, not just for his own benefit, but so that the blessing would flow to the nations. God’s blessings are never isolated; they carry purpose and responsibility. He blesses us to become vessels of His grace to others
2. BLESSING GOD IS OUR RIGHTFUL RESPONSE
Psalm 103 beautifully demonstrates the believer’s response to the One from whom every blessing flows:
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!”
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:” Psalm 103:1–2
And what are these benefits?
“…who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:3–5
We bless God not to add to Him, but to acknowledge and respond to His lavish goodness in our lives
3. BLESSING IN CHRIST: THE HEAVENLY TREASURE
In the New Testament, Paul makes a profound declaration:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3
The phrase “in Christ” appears repeatedly in Ephesians 1, showing that all our blessings are accessible only through union with Jesus.
Galatians 3:14 – “…that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus…”
John 1:16 – “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.”
Every spiritual blessing flows from being connected to Christ, who is the fullness of God.
Every spiritual treasure we enjoy is rooted in Christ, and therefore, the blessing belongs to God
These blessings in Christ include:
a) The seal of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13–14)
b) Chosen and Accepted (Ephesians 1:4–6, Romans 8:29–30)
We are chosen before the foundation of the world, predestined, and accepted in the Beloved.
We are foreknown, predestined, justified, and glorified.
c) Redemption and Forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7)
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins…”
d) Revelation of God’s Will (Ephesians 1:9)
He made known to us the mystery of His will in Christ.
e) Inheritance (Ephesians 1:11, 14)
We have obtained an inheritance and are sealed with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee
f) Adoption into God’s Family (Eph. 1:5)
We are no longer slaves but sons and heirs through Christ Galatians 4:4–7
4. EVERY GOOD AND PERFECT GIFT IS HIS
God is not only the source of spiritual blessings, but He is also the Giver of all things good:
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” – James 1:17
This verse reminds us that nothing good originates in man. Even the talents we use, the opportunities we have, the favor we receive, they are all gifts from the unchanging Father
So, if we are blessed in any way, the credit, praise, and blessing return to Him not to our hard work as we often sometimes think
5. EARTHLY BLESSINGS: DEUTERONOMY’S PROMISE
In Deuteronomy 28, God outlines the covenant blessings that follow obedience:
“And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.” Deuteronomy 28:2
These blessings included:
- Fruitfulness in body, land, and livestock (v.4)
- Victory over enemies (v.7)
- Abundance and rain in due season (v.11–12)
- Establishment as a holy people (v.9)
Yet even here, God makes it clear: He is the One who opens His storehouse and causes increase (v.12). The blessing flows from obedience, but originates in God’s goodness and faithfulness
In Christ, we enter a new covenant, where we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to walk in obedience and experience God’s ongoing blessings
6. THE ETERNAL ECHO OF BLESSING IN HEAVEN
Heaven doesn’t see blessing as something man possesses; it sees it as something owed to God:
“Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever.” – Revelation 7:12
This is a full circle. What God blesses us with on earth, we return as Worship in eternity. Every soul around the throne is a testimony that blessing belongs to our God
7. WE ARE CALLED TO BLESS, TOO
God calls us not only to bless Him, but also to be a channel of His blessing:
“…knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:9
God blessed Abraham to make him a blessing to the nations. (Genesis 12:2–3)
You are the light of the world. Our lives become a channel of hope and transformation. (Matthew 5:14–16)
We don’t repay evil with evil or insult with insult. Instead, we speak blessing, live with kindness, and walk in mercy, because we ourselves are inheritors of God’s blessing. As we bless others, we reflect the nature of our Father and draw attention back to Him
10 Practical Ways to Be a Blessing
- Speak Life-Giving Words (Proverbs 16:24, Ephesians 4:29)
- Give Generously and Cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7, Proverbs 22:9)
- Practice Hospitality (Romans 12:13, Hebrews 13:2)
- Forgive Freely (Ephesians 4:32, Luke 6:28)
- Serve Others Selflessly (Galatians 5:13, Matthew 23:11)
- Pray for Others (James 5:16, 1 Timothy 2:1)
- Encourage and Comfort the Weary (1 Thessalonians 5:11, Galatians 6:2)
- Share the Gospel Boldly (Romans 10:15, Mark 16:15)
- Be Present in Times of Pain (Romans 12:15)
- Disciple and Mentor Others (Matthew 28:19–20, 2 Timothy 2:2)
CONCLUSION: BLESSINGS BELONG TO OUR GOD
Blessing belongs to God, not just because He gives it, but because He is the Blessing. All we have and all we hope for comes from Him. When we understand this, our perspective changes. We no longer pursue blessings as possessions, but as pointers to the Goodness of God
Let your life be a living declaration that “Blessing belongs to our God!”
As believers, we are blessed beyond measure, not merely for ourselves, but for the glory of God and the benefit of others. We must:
- Know what we’ve received in Christ
- Live out those blessings in holiness, boldness, and gratitude
- Share the blessing by proclaiming the Good News to others
